Kompany optimistic over new campaign
After captaining City to their historic Premier League victory last season, Vincent Kompany has claimed he is hungry for more. The Belgium international has stated that after capturing the world’s attention last term, he is desperate for more success at the Eithad Stadium and has called for a solid pre-season.
Kompany, who received praise from many quarters following such an impressive campaign last year, says that it is vital that City put together a good pre-season ahead of the new campaign. Speaking to The Mirror, the 26-year-old says that after hearing so many people talk about City’s success all over the world, he is looking forward to the future at the Etihad Stadium.
“I’ve been to far too many places to remember this summer, but the main thing is that everywhere I’ve been, everyone had apparently seen the game or heard about that last day of the season, so you do realise that now we’ve made an impact worldwide. It’s about what lays ahead for us. I’m convinced this time we’re going to have a strong performance. Pre-season is massive. If you have a good pre-season, you usually have a good season. It’s such an important part of our whole campaign.”
Even though Roberto Mancini has made no secret of the fact that he wants to bolster his squad for the title defence, there has been little speculation linking City to any new players. As of yet, Mancini has not dipped into the transfer market and with the team currently on a training camp in Austria, there is unlikely to be any news for at least another week. However, the players who are already at the club are likely to be feeling much more confident about the future after Mancini signed a new five-year deal earlier this week. That should bring some stability, which is something that a lot of people were fearful wouldn’t occur.
