City’s Agger hopes dealt a blow

Even though Manchester City are supposedly contemplating another bid for Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, it looks as though Roberto Mancini could be wasting his time. Just days after announcing that he couldn’t imagine playing for another side in England, Agger has now stated that there is just one club in the world that could tempt him away from Anfield – and it’s not City.

Unsurprisingly, that particular club happens to be Barcelona. The 27-year-old has revealed that Barca are the only side that could lure him away from Anfield, telling the press, “There is one club who would make it very difficult for me to stay at Anfield. Barcelona would be great, because they are the best in the world. But I am feeling great where I am. I’m with a special club, and I feel I am influencing what happens on the pitch. I am happy to be a Liverpool player.”

Agger’s comments come just days after the Danish defender claimed that he would find it very hard to leave Liverpool. While he did admit at that time that his future is entirely up to Anfield chiefs, it seemed clear that he would only be looking to leave the Reds for a club abroad.

Such comments could put a real spanner in the works for City, who were tipped to improve on their recent offers for the former Brondby man. Speculation over recent weeks has suggested that City have had two offers rejected for the player, with the latest being in excess of £22m. With the club seemingly reluctant to enter negotiations for new players this summer, it now remains to be seen just which direction Mancini will take. He has already stated that he is more than happy with his strikers, so he could turn to a new defensive target now the Agger avenue appears blocked.
