Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has said that Bernardo Silva has the credentials to become the club captain in the future. The Portuguese has been a top performer for the Citizens since arriving from AS Monaco in 2017 and he made the PFA Team of the Year this year after contributing seven goals and seven assists in the top-flight.
Speaking to RMC Sport, Kompany said that Silva has the leadership qualities within him and he deserves to become a future captain at the club, he quipped: “I say to him often you are 50% clown, 50% leader. When he becomes 25% clown, 75% leader he will become the captain of this team. He is so strong and to be honest there is nobody who deserves this title more.”
Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling believes that the title race will be going down to the last game of the campaign. The mercurial winger was able to come up with a crucial goal against Crystal Palace during the weekend. He watched his former team, Liverpool, again a crucial advantage in the title race by beating Chelsea at Anfield. Sterling, though, knows that City will be able to win the title if they succeed in all of the remaining five league matches. Even though some of the matches are against tougher opponents like Tottenham, City have been very confident about defending the league title.
After having watched Liverpool stay at the top of the table for most of the season, Sterling says that he is being impressed with the resilience shown by the Reds, who are aiming to win the league title for the first time in Premier League history. The last league title won by Liverpool was back in 1990. Liverpool players have been very confident about winning all of their remaining four matches. In such a case, City have to win all of their league games. Sterling says that the title may not be decided in the next few weeks and the race will go into the last game of the season.
Pep Guardiola says that Manchester City still have the title in their hands and that he believes that every of the remaining five matches for his team can be won. City go into the last five matches of the season looking to overcome a two-point deficit to Liverpool, who have played a game more. After the weekend’s results in which Liverpool were able to beat Chelsea and City were able to overcome Crystal Palace, the gap remains at two points. City have a more difficult fixture list with games against the likes of Tottenham coming up, but Guardiola says that his team are more than capable of winning all of the remaining matches.
Manchester City have an immensely powerful squad that is capable of handling a lot of injuries, but the biggest problem for City will be their presence in other cup competitions. Apart from the Premier League, City are also involved in the Champions League and they have the FA Cup final also coming up. The club are aiming for a highly unlikely treble after having already picked up the League Cup back in February. Only a few weeks ago, Guardiola prayed that his team should not get any more injuries and it is a surprise from a manager who has the biggest squad strength in the league.
Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez believes Manchester City have the advantage over Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title. Both teams have gone head-to-head for the English crown this term but Martinez feels the Citizens have the edge with the unpredictability in terms of the goalscorers.
Speaking to the Premier League’s official website, Martinez said that the title will be decided between Manchester City and Liverpool this term, though the former may hold the edge with the numerous goalscoring options within their squad, he said: “City and Liverpool now are at a moment that is about themselves. When you look at Manchester City they have so many different options.
Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne may have been figured out during the ongoing campaign with the team adopting the same style of play under Pep Guardiola. The Citizens have already suffered more defeats in the Premier League than the entirety of the previous season but they are still in the running to secure a historic quadruple.
Speaking to reporters, De Bruyne highlighted that teams may have become fond of their gameplay under Guardiola but that is unlikely to force them to change. He added that even a treble can be deemed a huge success after league and Cup double last term and the task of winning all four competitions remains a tedious task nonetheless.
Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Gary Neville believes Manchester City are likely to beat Liverpool to the Premier League title, barring them suffering setbacks between now and the end of the campaign. The Citizens are currently three points behind the Reds at the top following the latter’s draw against West Ham United on Monday night.
Speaking on Sky Sports News, Neville highlighted that the Citizens remain the favourite to secure the English crown, given they have the experience of dealing with the pressure at this point of the campaign. He added that Tottenham Hotspur are potential contenders, although he does not see them eclipsing the top two to the title.
Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva believes the Citizens can catch up with Liverpool at the top of the table after beating their Premier League counterparts in the recent encounter. The Mancunian giants were seven points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side heading into the midweek game but they managed to reduce the deficit to four after securing a 2-1 triumph.
Speaking after the game, Silva highlighted that their title pursuit would have been over with a defeat and the positive result on Thursday night should encourage their prospects of retaining the English crown, he said: “We knew that if we lost it would almost be over because 10 points is a lot. Now four points we believe it is possible, knowing the Premier League is a very tough competition. The pressure was a little bit more onto us. We are happy with that, it is good. We are used to that kind of pressure. Happily the performance from everyone was good and we got three very important points against a fantastic team.”
Germany international Leroy Sane has said that he is very happy with his work at Manchester City amid suggestions that he is close to extending his contract with the club. The young attacker found himself out-of-favour under Pep Guardiola during the opening month of the campaign but he has since managed to command a regular role after showing a better workrate on and off the field.
Amidst this, there has been the positive talk of him signing a new contract with the Mancunian giants and speaking to reporters, the German has acknowledged that could be the case in the near future, he said:”From the beginning, when I arrived here, I have been really happy. I enjoy playing with the coach and the players. They are all amazing but most importantly they are all amazing people and good characters. I have felt really at home here since day one and of course [signing an extension] is possible.”
Sky Sports pundit Danny Higginbotham has backed Raheem Sterling to eclipse his goalscoring count from the previous campaign. The England international has shown good progress under the guidance of Pep Guardiola over the past two years and the previous season witnessed his best-ever campaign after contributing 23 goals across all competitions for the club.
He has continued the good run this term with seven goals in all competitions already and Higginbotham believes Sterling has the capacity of eclipsing the previous season’s feat with a 30-goal season, he said: “People still say his finishing isn’t great and we still talk about him missing chances, but this is a player who scored 23 goals last season playing as a winger more often than not.
Manchester City attacker Bernardo Silva has excluded Manchester United when asked about the potential challengers for the Premier League title this season. The Citizens have continued the form from the previous campaign with a 10-match unbeaten run and they are currently topping the standings ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.
As such, Pep Guardiola’s side are widely considered as the favourites to reclaim their title and when asked about the same, Silva said: “I think either Chelsea and Liverpool, they are very strong. Arsenal as well, even Tottenham. I think it will be harder because last season nobody was expecting us to win as many games and to reach that level of points so this season the teams they know they have to do better to beat us. Of course it will be very hard, but we will work every game to get the three points and at the end of it try and celebrate winning one more Premier League.”
