Mancini says no to RVP

Despite being linked with the club for the past few months, it now appears as though Manchester City are all but out of the race to sign Robin Van Persie. Roberto Mancini has stated that he is extremely doubtful that the Dutchman will sign for City, while he has also announced that Edin Dzeko will consequently remain at the club.

It was understood that Van Persie was one of the players on top of Mancini’s shopping list, although there have been rumours over recent weeks that the Italian has become frustrated after the club failed to lodge a concrete bid for the former Feyenoord striker. Moreover, it has also been speculated that Van Persie has expressed no interest in a potential move to the Etihad Stadium, with his preferred destination being either Juventus or Manchester United. Bearing the above in mind, some City supporters have been preparing themselves for the worst for some time now.

Judging by Mancini’s comments, it does appear as though the breakdown in the transfer is due to Van Persie himself. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, the 47-year-old said, “Van Persie? No, I don’t think he will come here.”

His comments about Edin Dzeko could in fact be the ones that surprise the City faithful more. Despite the intense rumours linking him with a move out of City, Mancini claims that he needs the Bosnian to stay at the Etihad Stadium to promote competition amongst his forward players. He said, “I’m pleased, as this means we have good players, but it’s pretty unlikely he will leave. He is right to say it’s no fun being on the bench, but when you join a big club then competition is normal.”

Bearing the above in mind, it remains to be seen which direction Mancini will now turn. After recently preparing City fans for transfers in the near future, it will be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve.
